Exercise & Safety with Your Pet

Part 3 in the How to Be a Responsible Pet Owner Series

Exercise & Safety with your Pet

Pets need regular exercise. Just like you, your pet needs to run and walk and have fun on a daily basis. How can you be responsible when you take your dog or cat for a walk? Use a leash and make sure they are wearing an ID tag with your phone number and contact information on it. It’s also a great idea to have your dog either tattooed or get a microchip.

Microchips are a small, computer sized chip, the size of a grain of rice, inserted under the skin. It contains you address, phone number and contact information of the pet’s owner. If your pet get’s lost and ends up at a vet or shelter, they can scan the animal with a small device that will read the information on the chip, just by passing the scanner over the animal’s fur.

When you walk your pet, you should always carry bags to clean up after them if they go to the bathroom. Nobody wants to come out and find dog poo on the sidewalk or in their yard. Remember that pet ownership means you need to think of others when your pet makes a mess. Cleaning it up is the polite and responsible thing to do.

Having a pet is a big responsibility. Our pets rely on us to take care of them and keep them safe. “How to Be a Responsible Pet Owner” shows how to love and respect your pet. Teach your kids what it really means to be a pet owner.
