The Good Dog Blog will be awarding a weekly “Good Dog Award” to those doing good things for dogs.
This week’s Good Dog Award Winner is Lulu, a Goldendoodle, who is a certified therapy dog at Ballard-Durand Funeral & Cremation Services in White Plains, New York. Lulu has been working as a “Comfort Companion” during funeral visitations and memorial services at the request of families since May of 2015.
Therapy dogs have been utilized in a variety of health care settings. From nursing homes to schools to hospitals, dogs working in animal assisted therapy programs serve to calm and give solace to those dealing with illness, stress and/or intense emotions. Research has shown that using therapy dogs in health care settings can reduce stress and help people cope with wide ranging issues.
Lulu is one of a growing number of therapy dogs being used in funeral homes, providing comfort to bereaved families. What better place to utilize the stress reducing potential of therapy dogs?
We’d like to salute Lulu, our Good Dog Award Winner, and all the other funeral home therapy dogs for being such wonderful canine ambassadors.
